Today I went home for lunch and finally caught the elusive pregnant stray cat. (That was not my lunch, in case anyone wonders. I had a Boca burger on Ezekiel bread, then imagined real food and fell into a reverie...) It's kind of a funny story, in that I felt personally responsible for her because she trusted me. Turns out, a few of us in my apartment building had the same experience, even the building manager, who has a "I know you have a good heart, but stop feeding them" policy. |

Things did not turn out at all like I planned. Today is my saddest day in recent memory. All the no-kill, more comfy shelters are full. No, I didn't call all of them, but after getting a sympathetic call back from Vi (lovely person) at Friends of Animals, I just gave up. She gets so many calls each day from people begging for a place for a kitten because everywhere else is full, that I gave up. The Humane Society sounded promising, but their policy is to bring animals to the city shelter first. |

Yes, my kitten from last night is still in her bathroom domain. I almost feel sad she's not making a fuss--the only caterwauling is drunk people doing versions of the latest pop songs outside the window. How quickly she resigned herself to a warm place, food, water, blankets. She sits there purring and I tell her, "No there is more to life than this." There is a whole ROOM out there, kid. Sante D'Or is full and so was my schedule today, so tomorrow I will be searching out other no-kill shelters and report my findings. |

Here I am in my micro-size bathroom with the stray kitten I took home tonight. She is smaller than she appears. She has also consumed an entire 5 oz can of food--what my two large adult cats split between them for a meal! Now she's happily farting away. I saw her at 9 pm tonight on my way home and tried to leave her there, but I just couldn't. She's the ONLY ONE (I swear) out of the numerous neighborhood strays I've ever brought home because of concern about what my own cats would do and not wanting to expose them to diseases she might have. |

I just heard that Blue Collar has three cats who were just dropped off and need homes. Please consider them or pass this on to someone who needs a cat! It's also a friendly local place to buy pet supplies, get vaccines, or take classes. They have a good website: www.bluecollarworkingdog.com Blue Collar 1533 Echo Park Ave.

This looks like fun! Sadly, I have no mutt to strut :( This event is on September 24th and raises money for the Best Friends society.

The kittens are, for the most part, thriving and playing like maniacs. As of today, they are determined to get out of the bathroom, too! Oh, and tonight, water everywhere and their bed moved to the other side of the bathroom. They are having fun. I've been worried today about the littlest one with whom I've fallen madly in love. (Yes, I wish I could keep him, it's just not the responsible thing for me to have more pets. |

Would you throw these guys away in a dumpster? I didn't think so! you're reading this blog. Some waste of space did, though. Luckily for the babies (and us), a cat lover in Silverlake found them and is fostering them. She took them to the vet who rid them of severe fleas and they are on prescription eye drops that are clearing up an infection--their eyes look better each day. Now look how happy they are! They are healthy, playful, affectionate--everything we love about kittens! |

I received an email from this unique dog rescue in Hollywood. They were looking for volunteers and I had to pass the word along. The Mafia Monroe Foundation is named for Ms. Monroe's dog "Mafia," a gift from Frank Sinatra. Not that I think dogs are a good gift idea for most recipients, but it seems to have worked out well in this case. I never knew what an animal person Marilyn was, but it makes sense.

Over the weekend I was at the animal shelter dropping off a lost dog I found at Echo Lake. The little guy had no tags and joined our group to follow us around the lake. I was deeply sad to leave him at the shelter, but thought that was the best way for his people to find him and for him to be safe. There are a plethora of little kittens--several litters--up for adoption. The most precious sight in the world to me is baby animals, especially kittens. If you have been thinking of taking the plunge and adopting a cat or kitten, I say just go for it--if your living situation is stable and you aren't attached to your sleep schedule, furniture, or sanity, the reward is that they give much more than they get by running your household. |
